The Power of Bikes Dear Friends and Family, As many of you know, in the past few years, Ironman has become a big part of my life. I signed up for Ironman Wisconsin, more to check it off my bucket list (and to prove that coxswains are athletes too!), than anything else. Along the way, I realized not only how much I love racing, but how much I love training. I found that I could endure the long training days, overcome the mental and physical challenges, and I enjoyed figuring out how to put together a successful race. Placing 1st in my age group at Ironman Wisconsin in 2010 and Ironman Texas in 2011 gave me a slot to compete at the World Championships in Kona in 2011. This winter, I struggled to put meaning behind my training and passion behind my racing. Medals and trophies mean little to me. It wasnt until I found World Bicycle Relief that I found an organization that resonated with me on all levels. WBR is an organization that provides access to independence and livelihood through The Power of Bicycles, with a personal fundraiser. The money raised helps to provide robust bicycles to students, healthcare workers and entrepreneurs in rural Africa; connecting them with education, healthcare and economic opportunities. I feel privileged to be joining a group of talented and passionate athletes including Robbie Ventura, Jordan Rapp, and 2010 Kona Champion Miranda Carfrae in supporting World Bicycle Relief. After an incredible experience in Kona , I kicked 2012 off with the Birkie, a 54k Cross Country ski race that after finishing 48/50 in my age group, encouraged me to stick with triathlons. After racing the Boston marathon in April and Ironman Louisville in August, I'm looking forward to racing my 5th Ironman in Florianopolis, Brazil, with my brother Will. I am excited about being able to give back to those less fortunate than me through The Power of Bicycles. May is Bike Month! With my last few weeks of training before my big race ahead of me, I'm hoping to reach my goal of $3400 which signifies 25 bikes as well as training for one mechanic. Together we are hoping to raise enough money to provide two schools in Zimbabwe with bikes for their students. Thank you for helping me put Wheels in the Field!
