We are seeking participants and donations for the World Bike Relief Poker Run, co-sponsored by SRAM and the Rotaract Club of San Luis Obispo. The Poker Run consists of two routes, an 11-mile bike ride around San Luis Obispo or a 3-mile walk through downtown, where the rider/walker picks up cards along the way at five designated stops to complete their poker hand. This is not a race. The player with the best poker hand at the finish wins. For a donation of $5.00 per hand, players can play as many hands as they like. There will be a prize for the best poker hand, and for the worst hand. There will be live music, food, beer on tap for purchase, and a raffle at Central Coast Brewery after the Poker Run. The Poker Run will take place on May 19, 2012, and we would love (you, your employees, etc.) to participate and hopefully win some cool prizes!
Proceeds of the Poker Run go directly to the World Bicycle Relief foundation to purchase bikes to send to developing African countries such as Zambia. Founded in 2005, World Bicycle Relief is committed to bringing the power of bicycles to the developing world where, compared to walking, bicycles represent an enormous leap in productivity, access to healthcare, education and economic development opportunities. World Bicycle Relief works with non-profit groups such as the World Health Organization, Catholic Relief Services and Care International and has provided more than 100,000 bicycles and trained more than 700 field mechanics since 2005. Last year, we raised over $2700 through the Poker Run and donated 20 bikes to World Bike Relief. This year, we hope to raise enough money to purchase 30 bikes to send to Africa. World Bicycle Relief is a nonprofit organization transforming individuals and communities through the Power of Bicycles. Since 2005, thanks to support from individuals like you, World Bicycle Relief has provided over 125,000 specially designed, locally assembled, rugged bicycles to students, healthcare workers and entrepreneurs and trained over 800 field mechanics.
