Featured Fundraiser: Josh Kline & Team WBR Indiana
Josh Kline--captain of World Bicycle Relief's first local team, Team WBR Indiana--took some time to share with WBR about the team's members, upcoming races, and how they're using their sport and their passion to raise money for the Power of Bicycles. Read on!
How did Team WBR Indiana come to be? Who all races for the team?
Team WBR Indiana consists of a group of six guys, all with a passion for cycling and giving back. Between the six of them, the group covers everything from cyclocross to mountain bike racing to road racing. As a team, our goal was to raise $7,500 for World Bicycle Relief and with time left in the season, we are looking to go beyond that. We are Team WBR’s first local team and have set a high standard between raising funds, raising awareness, and raising the bar overall for being standup athletes and people. The team includes: Josh Kline (team captain), Seph Hatley, Brian Falloon, Mike Minichiello, Russell Nichols, and newest addition Dan McFadden. More info on each of the riders can be found here.
What is your favorite programming aspect of World Bicycle Relief?
Our favorite programming aspect of WBR is simply the fact that WBR's good work allows us to be closely connected to the charity. WBR staff members Claire, Katie, Jennifer and FK have made us feel very much a part of the greater WBR Team. A lot of the staff have competitive backgrounds and are as equally delighted to hear about our achievements in racing as they are about our fundraising efforts. We like that.
Why did you choose to support World Bicycle Relief through your athletic pursuits?
At our age, we are really just racing for pride and fitness. There really is no glory in what we do. There is a lot of opportunity in competitive masters cycling for one to take themselves too seriously. If we are going to put the hours in, ask our family and others to tolerate our obsession, then we might as well be racing for a cause. We chose Team WBR as the cause resonated with all of us and the team support network was very well organized. Now that we are well into our first year of racing for Team WBR, we couldn't be happier about how engaged WBR is in our efforts.
What is your team goal for 2013?
Our 2013 team fundraising goal was $7,500. We passed that number in August, so I think it makes sense to go for five figures in 2013. We should be able to get there. It might take a holiday party in December, but I am confident the guys will get behind a new goal if the bar is raised. Donating 75 bikes this year seems like a nice number!
On August 17, we hosted a Team WBR Indiana Cocktail Party at my place. We had a gorgeous night and well over 150 attendees. We raised $7,000 and were overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters. We had great support from FK, WBR board member Todd Ricketts who was present to speak on behalf of the charity and from Claire, Katie and Jen. The party featured live music from a local band's front-man Sam King, cocktails from Jason Foust who is the president of the Indiana Bartender's guild, beer from Sun King ( a local brewery that sponsors our efforts ) and tacos from the Taco Lassi food truck that posted up in our driveway for a good 4 hours. The Team WBR Indiana crew set up a small silent auction and retail table that included hand-made helmet and shoe bags made by Seph's mom, a painting by Mike's wife, and a gift basket prepared by Russ. Jeff Gold, the local SRAM rep, also donated a nice set of Zipp bars and some other swag. We had an amazing confluence of people in attendance. Our supporters came to party and good times were had. It felt more like a wedding than a benefit party. Next year our goal is 300 attendees and to double our fundraising for this event.
While it’s not about results, how has the season gone?
We had a great results in Mountain this summer with Mike, Russ and Brian putting our colors on the podium multiple times. We should have series results soon and we are hoping for a series podium for one of the guys. Team WBR Indiana will be kicking off the CX season this weekend with races in Ohio and Indiana. More to come on our results but we are feeling strong and ready!
A special thanks to Josh and all of Team WBR Indiana for their commitment to cycling and supporting a cause through their sport. Good luck in your next races!
